Hair (Rapunzel)

By Fareeha Shah

A foul, menacing odor has filled the air, but you ignore it. You methodically, almost rhythmically run a brush through your heavy hair, hair that is the shade of a buttercup in the sunlight, hair that coils itself around your elbow in pleasure. The hair is alive; but of course you already know that. You never did before, though, Gothel made sure of that by keeping your head tightly bound in a blade-spiked helmet in case you tried to remove it.  That one fatal night though, when her cracked, wrinkled hands forgot to turn the lock that bound your head so tightly…

A slow, relishing smile spreads across your face at the memory of your inhumanly strong, golden hair wrapping itself around Gothel’s neck, until her face turned blue, until she stopped writhing like a worm on a hook.  The rush of endorphins through your veins wasn’t just because you were finally free. The power, the rush you got from killing her (so easy it was) as something you wanted to feel again. You put the brush down; your wrists have ugly grooves in them, ones that will remain permanent.  They still throb, and your silky hair soothingly wraps itself around them as if to comfort you. You remember your hair freeing you from the shackles that had bound them, effortlessly crushing them like weak twigs. You decide that you are ready to leave behind the tower once and for all.

You contemplate climbing down the shrubbery and vines, but your hair does the thinking for you. It wraps one end around your waist, and one firmly around the bannister of the balcony. You have gotten used to your hair thinking for itself surprisingly fast. It feels almost natural, you think, as you lower yourself down the brick tower. The stench of death, however, follows you down.  Your hair can smell it too, it seems. You can tell that it itches for another kill too. Your feet touch the ground.

It is like nothing you have ever felt before. You are used to the icy marble flooring within the tower, and have been for seventeen years now. This is completely new to you. The grass tickles your bare feet, the cool wind slips through your hair. You can hear the trickle of water nearby, and in the horizon, beyond the wildflower-covered meadow that you stand in, you see a stream. Gone is that feeling of suffocation, of confinement. You are completely free; you feel as liberated as the birds you can see in the sky.

What you do not know, however, is that with imprisonment comes a price. What you do not know is that in the very moment you killed Gothel, something within you, your sanity, snapped. You think that you have it all perfectly under control, but after seventeen years of being completely severed from human contact… how can you? You, however, are completely oblivious to all this as you wade through the shallow stream, gulping down water as if it is the elixir of life and emerge into a forest.

You gasp appreciatively as you take in the breathless majesty of the beauty around you. Emotions that you have never felt before start to rise up within you. This seems to agitate your hair, as if it wants to completely sever any humanity present within you. You look at the tall, green trees, but you see them as dark, menacing, looming, and even threatening.  The entangled mossy undergrowth and poison ivy intertwine with each other feel damp and spongy under your feet. It seems your hair has begun to affect how you think too.

There is a twitch amongst the leaves. You feel the entire forest go still when suddenly your hair lashes out, cutting as a whip, and returns holding a white, fluffy creature with long ears. You cannot place it, as you have only read one book in your entire life; a ridiculous tale about a prince and his grandeur. Your hair snaps the neck. You feel that rush in your stomach, the feeling of empowerment, of relief. But it isn’t as fierce as it was before. Frustrated, you stumble out of the forest into a whole other world.

This meadow is cleaner; it is fenced off. A man and a woman dressed in the most regal clothes imaginable sat sadly on a stone bench while a little boy played with a golden puppy. You recognize that boy as the prince; he wears the same clothes as the prince in your book, collecting dust somewhere in the tower.

What you do not know is that that man and woman are your parents. They have grieved your loss for seventeen years. Not a year goes by that they don’t light a candle for every year you aged on your birthday. This year, seventeen candles illuminated every household in the village. That little boy is your brother-it is after years of trying that your parents were finally able to have a child. After months of searching they found a dog with the exact shade of fur as your hair and gave it to him.

You are oblivious to all of this. All you see is the little boy, with the cornflower blue eyes, the fair hair. Your hair tells you to wait till the attention of his parents is diverted elsewhere before coming out of the shadows. They turn to the grazing horses. You walk towards him slowly, even deliberately until your hair can’t take it anymore. It reaches out (flies out, really) and grabs the boy. It enjoys squeezing the life out of him. Everything is quiet.

This time, the pleasure is even stronger than before. He was helpless. So helpless, and you had all the power. You are so engrossed in your ecstasy that you don’t notice the queen look up. You don’t hear her exclamation of surprise, her scream of terror. You don’t look up to see the horrified recognition in their faces. You only look up when you hear the deep, commanding voice that belongs to the king.

“Rapunzel?”

The Three Little Cannibals

By Ammara Mohsin

Chopper, the little pig, stood beside the large, boiling cauldron with a contented smile. Food, he thought as he rubbed his hand gently on his stomach. Finally, they would have a proper meal.

He turned around to face the brown, worn out table. On it lay the body of a fat lady, chopped into six distinct parts. He reached for the two legs first and lowered them gently into the pot. He did the same with the arms.

He started stirring the pot with a battered stick.

His younger brother, Grinder, stood near the kitchen door staring at the body with fixed, hungry eyes. His tongue was dangling from his mouth, dripping saliva.

“Quit staring and help me out with dinner!” Chopper hissed.

“This looks,” he licked his lips, “delicious!”

“Did you not hear me? Hunter’s gone to get more firewood. If this fat lady isn’t cooked by the time he gets back here, he’ll eat us instead!” Chopper snarled.

“Fine! What do you want me to do?”

“Chop off the ears and the nose from her face. And don’t forget the juicy tongue. We need more flavor.”

Grinder picked up the bloody axe from beneath the table and did as directed. He then swept them from the table and dropped them into the cauldron animatedly.

“Next, cut off her long hair. We’ll have salad today, too!” Chopper smiled a devil’s smile. “Oh, and I’ve prepared a dressing from her blood. It’s in the refrigerator. Pour it over the hair.”

Grinder’s face lit up as he set about the task. Suddenly, they heard a frantic knock on the door.

“About time!” Chopper said. “Go answer, Grinder.”

Grinder went to answer the door. He opened it to find his eldest brother, Hunter, panting. He hurried inside and closed the door with a loud thud.

“What’s the matter?” Chopper came out of the kitchen.

“The wolf!” Hunter exclaimed. “He’s coming after us with an entire army!”

“But how did he know?” Grinder piped in.

“The fat lady; her husband told them!” Hunter explained.

“The one who escaped?” Chopper asked, concerned.

“Yes, yes! Now hurry! We must run or we will be caught!” Hunter warned.

“But we haven’t even had dinner yet!” Grinder complained.

“You idiot! If you want to stay and get caught, be my guest! I’m out of here! Tat obstinate wolf officer has been after us for a year now! He’ll get the court to sentence us to death, or worse still, life imprisonment! We’ve killed a hundred people in the area!” Hunter shook Grinder’s shoulders hysterically. “Let’s go!”

As if on cue, the huge army of wolves outside the tiny cottage howled in unision. Their leader, Officer Burke yelled in a loud, clear voice. “You have been surrounded by my army from all four sides! I know you’re inside, the three filthy pigs! Do not attempt to escape, the arms of the law are very long. You will eventually be caught, and punished severely. Surrender yourselves!”

The three little pigs stood inside the house, frozen with fear.

“There has to be a way!” Grinder cried.

Hunter went toward the window. “They’re all over the place!”
Suddenly, they heard a loud bang on the door. And another. The three brothers stood petrified as the wolves continued to bang on the door, attempting to break it. The cottage door gave way in a few moments. The wolves barged inside the  house, guns at the ready.

Officer Burke stopped at the sight of the three pigs. He smiled cunningly and aimed his gun at them. “The three little cannibals! Finally caught! Did you think you could away with all the murders of those innocent people? Well, here you are! I will make sure you three rot in jail for the rest of your lives!” He spat on the floor. “Guards! Handcuff them and drag them to the police station. Let them taste justice for once!” He smirked.

The guards obliged, and started to drag the three by their feet. The last thing Grinder saw before being mercilessly dragged out was the large black cauldron, cooking the food which he would now never get to eat.

Jack And The Beanstalk

By Zubair Bashir

There, underneath the dead tree –which had shed its leaves to welcome Autumn- stood a skinny, young boy; wearing a rusty brown, spacious, sleeveless patched shirt which drooped over his shoulders all the way to his knees. His half torn blue pants had holes in several places –definitely not the fashion of the time. That boy was none other than the quiet and traumatized Jack, who lived in the prosperous city of Athens. He suffered from a terrible fate which brings him to this very moment which may be the turning point in his life.

His father had abandoned his mother, who was forced to raise her child all on her own with minimal income. She made use of all opportunities to earn some extra money so that her child would not have to spend the night on an empty stomach, then it did not matter whether it was cleaning a house or spending a day at the brothel. She vowed to protect her child and she did just that. However; Jack was ostracized from society because soon the news had spread that Jack’s mother was nothing more than a mere, prostitute; and the damage was done. This news devastated Jack who then decided to spend the gloomy evening under the tree.

As he recollected his thoughts an old man walked along, eager to inquire the reason behind Jack’s gloom. “My child your face, it is like a book”, he stated.

“What do mean sir?” asked Jack in a soft, slightly shaky yet humble tone.
“Something seems to be troubling you. Would like to share the cause of your distress?”
“Is that a pun sir, because I am in no mood to be ridiculed and isolated anymore!” Jack stated in a firmer manner.
“Not at all, in fact to prove the sincerity of my question I gift you these beans. Do not take them to be random jelly beans just because they are multi-coloured boy”, the old man said with some wisdom in his voice “plant them next to the almighty Mount Olympus as an offering to your lords and maybe they might change your fate once and for all”, the old man walked away leaving Jack on his own, so that he may dwell with his thoughts.
“What the heck, I have nothing to lose”, and with that Jack made his way towards Olympus. He planted the beans, watered them and made his way home which coincidentally was not that far a walk.

Jack forcefully spent another sleepless night but the obedient child did not complain but rather respected his mother’s sacrifices. In the night he felt a strong tremor which wakes him from his sleep. He tip toed outside to investigate and was blankly staring at the huge beanstalk that had grown, whirling around Olympus. All of a sudden he could see see two horses galloping towards him. They were by no means normal but rather huge in size and elegant with dark thick hair. They were none other than Balius and Xanthus. Jack found a note attached to their mane which contained the following message:

OH JACQUES YOU HAVE BEEN SUMMONED BY THE LORDS OF OLYMPUS. MOUNT ONE OF THE TWO CREATURES AND THEY SHALL TRANSPORT YOU TO OUR REALM

He followed the instructions and clumsily mounted Balius and with a roaring neigh-which seemed to disturb no one else- they are off like lightning. They galloped on the beanstalk which took Jack high above the clouds where he could see Centaurs grazing the fields on the flat plains of Olympus which are not visible from ground level. Then there stood a huge statue of the Minotaur right outside an opening which probably lead to the Cretan Labyrinth. The horses do not stop till they reached The Arena. After dropping Jack they immediately dispersed. The Arena floor was glistening with the turquoise coloured marble. There stood numerous, huge, tall, white pillars which were supporting a glass dome above. On the dome was a detailed painting of a muscular man, with a long beard; wearing a white robe and was assisted by the lightning in his hand. The poor boy was still trying to recollect all that has taken place, when a soft yet strong voice surrounded The Arena.

“Young Jacques, welcome. Welcome to the Realm of the Lords”. A graceful lady walked down the stairs and made her way towards Jack. She wore a shiny white robe with borders made of gold. In one hand she held a spear made of white marble. Her blonde hair neatly tied up and revealed as she took of her metal helmet which was immediately carried away by a Laelap, which had escorted her.
“A-a-are you Athene?” Jack whispered in awe.
“Yes I am and I have called you here for a reason. I have for long monitored your mother’s wretched life and I do pity her. I am aware of a man’s selfish desires and of the hardships you have faced, that too without complain. As a reward I shall grant you and your mother a more prosperous life”, and with that the Laelap returned with a sack in his mouth and brought a small herd of sheep with him. “This is your gift. Appreciate it, and be loyal to your gods”.

With that statement Balius returned to The Arena. “Take him back Balius”. Jack is not slow and again mounted Balius who with powerful stride took Jack back to the Earthly realm. As soon as he reached he decided to go back to sleep after the exhausting and confusing events of the night. He got up to the braying of sheep and looked outside the window to find the entire herd. He took a step back causing the sack to topple and reveal its contents, which were pure gold. The event was far from a figment of the boy’s imagination.

Sleeping Beauty

By Nayab Tufail

The heavy clouds collided violently with each other as though the gods were at war in heavens. Chilled rain poured fresh from the welkins, so sleek and slithery that it was almost painful to see it pelt out of the clouds, like the eventual descent of the gods’ wrath. The queen was oscillating between life and death, her traumatic shrieks were echoing in the valleys. The labour was tremendously agonizing, she was praying for an escapade, even death would be a delight. Thunder clapped, a monstrous lightning struck, cries of a baby were heard…

With the loss of a devoted wife the king gained a daughter. The baby girl was left alone, locked up in the dark nursery and her howls were ignored. Meanwhile the wet mud was dug out and the queen was placed in her eternal resting place. The next morning the king unlocked the nursery and peeked inside the cradle. The princess was pale, with sickly eyes and chestnut hair. There was a peculiar charm in her countenance, the king almost abruptly named her Aurora (bright glow) to dismiss all images of darkness and devilry associated with her. Aurora grew up to be a troubled beauty, there seemed to be a demon governing her being. Very often her eyes looked like a beast was glaring through them, she fell into occasional epileptic fits and was loathed for her stubborn nature. At fifteen Aurora found little to amuse her and often went around exploring the palace in her usual witless manner until one day she came across her mother's enchanting jewels. With lack of interest, Aurora pulled the golden necklace over her head. The necklace was elegant, with a pendant of the finest gold in the kingdom. I t hung to her bony neck and looked ugly. Disappointed, Aurora fastened the necklace tighter to her grim neck, until the necklace started to suffocate her. Her face turned feeble and ghastly as she collapsed into the nearest bed, she tried to move but her strength seemed to fail her as she descended in a deep slumber. It was assumed that she would eventually wake up. The king patiently waited by her side everyday and gradually the time came when the sleeping princess was looked upon once in months, once in years.

A century elapsed. Over the passage of time the king and the kingdom perished and a dense forest blanketed the castle. Aurora lay there just as she had a hundred years ago with the necklace choking her neck. Her pointed bones protruded out of her thin skin as though they would tear through it any minute. She resembled a skeleton, with a layer of skin looking like a corpse. Her chestnut hair had turned silver, like electric wires hanging from her head and her mouth was open exposing her decaying purple tongue. The veins on her hands stood up like small fat snakes, and looked as if they would explode any second. The full moon blazed in the sky, there was something very eerie about the night, a mystifying glow in the celestial body. That night marked the end of a century. Aurora lay frozen in the chamber until suddenly her wrinkled eyes flew open. Her soul felt heavy .A storm brewed inside her. What had been clinging stubbornly to her soul all these years now struggled to depart. Aurora let out a high pitched shriek, her voice creaked. Whatever it was that had devoured her being all these years now seemed to escape. She jerked up and sat upright in the bed as a crunching sound rose from her backbone. The doomed necklace still pinched what was left of her neck. Emptied of strength, Aurora sat there, waiting for her end to come.........

Cinderella

By Afnan Imran

“What are your plans for tonight, Agent 307?” The words came out in a shrill hiss from the mouth of an ugly hag with green skin and black rotting teeth that were visible through her open mouth. Her black eyes shone with venom as she stared at the salt-and-pepper-haired woman in front of her.

“I have forbidden Cinderella to attend the ball, Commander.” The middle-aged woman said as she smoothed a hand over her ball gown.

“You fool! How do you intend to stage a full-scale takeover on Imperia’s behalf with such a hare-brained scheme?” the hag screeched. “Seven years! Seven years you have spent on this planet and this is what you come up with?”

“Commander, we agreed at the last meeting that a bid of takeover will be signed by the Prince. The minor agents, posing as my daughters, will not be able to catch him unless Cinderella vanishes from the picture. Her beauty will surely captivate him.”

“You will be hanged if the human king learns of this deception before your plan is underway! I shall have to step in!” the hag said with irritation as her long, crooked nails drummed an impatient tattoo against the windowpane. “Go to the ball. If you see Cinderella, make sure her time with the prince is not disturbed.”

xxxx

Watching the carriage depart with Agent 307 and the minor agents, the hag pulled out her communicator and contacted her master.

A gruesome face appeared on the screen, the crooked nose and the sickening, green face were worsened by the evil grin etched on it.

“Ah, Commander. What news do you bring me ?” he asked ion a thick, nasal voice.

“Your Majesty, the trap will be set tonight, but I need a few supplies fir-” she began.

“Tonight!!” the King of Imperia bit out, his face twisting in rage. “This takeover should have already taken place, you imbecile!”

“Master, please! Humans have proven difficult. Agent 307 has lived in disguise on this planet for years, with that man who died and his daughter. One more night should hardly matter.” pleaded the hag.

“Very well. What do you need?”

“I shall require a mind control device, shaped like a pair of glass slippers of size six, and a computerized carriage, fitted with a bomb.” she listed.

“Your items will be teleported in moments. Be sure that your plan finally succeeds. You have until tomorrow.” The screen went blank with an ominous threat.

The hag grinned; she would succeed. Cinderella would soon serve her purpose.

xxxx

“Wake up, dear girl.”

A faint whisper roused Cinderella from slumber. She found herself looking into black, expressionless eyes, framed in an ugly green face. Her own deep-blue yes, swollen with tears widened. She brushed her sunlight-colored hair off her brow, not believing her eyes.

“Wh-who are you?” she whispered, goosebumps raising on her skin.

“Do not be afraid, child. I mean no harm.” The hag said in a soft voice. “I have come to help you. You would like to go to the ball, wouldn’t you?”

xxxx

Dressed in an ice-blue gown, with a silver tiara, a silver necklace, and glass slippers, a grateful Cinderella waved goodbye to the old hag from the window of the beautifully crafted, white, pumpkin-shaped carriage. It rolled gracefully down the road, preceded by six white horses.

xxxx

For Cinderella, time flew by. The evening was wonderful, spent dancing with the Prince. She never wanted this night to end. It was so much better than her stepmother’s slavery.

Love, she thought. It is such a beautiful feeling. She gazed into the Prince’s golden-brown eyes as he smiled down at her.

Suddenly, the clock struck midnight. Against her will, her body wrenched itself away from the Prince. Her feet carried her out of the palace and onto the steps, where she mechanically took off one glass slipper and left it on the steps.

She stumbled into the carriage, as if by force. The door was barely shut behind her before it started moving. It travelled far from the palace until it was only a smudge in the background.

With a horrendous noise, the carriage exploded into a debris of rubble, destroying its occupant along with it.

xxxx

Prince Edward ran after the beauty who had bewitched him all night long. He was too late! She had left! Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a sparkling slipper on the steps.

Something to identify the beauty with! He picked it up and cradled it like a precious gift.

“Prince,” he heard a gravelly voice behind him.

He turned around to see an old hag with green skin grinning wickedly at him.

“Sign these papers, will you?”

Edward stared transfixed and horrified as his hand reached out for the proffered pen, as if by a will of its own, and signed his name on the paper.

“Imperians will now rule the earth!” the hag cackled. “You are of no use anymore. Go to the highest tower ion the palace, dear Prince, and jump to your death with that slipper in your hand.”

Failing to clear his mind of the haze that had settled over, Edward found himself obeying.

“Oh, and Prince, take your father with you. Push him first, but you must not warn him of your intentions.

xxxx

The hag remained below, watching two screaming and flailing bodies plummet to their death. She was soon joined by her under-agents who praised her vindictiveness.

She pulled out her communicator and sent a homing signal to her king. Her hair-raising cackle split the night air as the first space shuttle was sighted. A technological revolution was to come to earth.

Anastasia

By Areeba Jibril

I watched as Cinderella scrubbed the stone floors at the end of the corridor. She was contentedly humming a song which bothered me. I stomped through the hallway in my muddy boots, kicking her bucket as I passed by it. She didn’t bother reprimanding me; she was too used to my behavior. That only served to add to my anger.

I stomped up the winding staircase and into my room, slamming the door shut behind me. I noticed the ball gown from the previous night lying on my bed and I picked it up and tried to rip it apart. The cloth tore a bit, but not enough to satisfy my anger so I threw the gown outside the window.

I regretted my actions as soon I realized what I had done, but there was nothing I could do now. The dress was surely ruined. I collapsed onto my bed sobbing.

Why hadn’t the Prince liked me? I asked myself, desperately searching within for an answer.

The evening had started out so well, even Mother had only been able to find few faults with my appearance.

Once we arrived at the castle, I danced with three gentlemen one after the other. For once none of them seemed to be old enough to be my grandfather.

Then, somehow it all began to go wrong. I noticed the society matrons’ gazes on me, and I smiled at them politely before following my instincts to run away. I looked back at them as soon I as was outside of their line of sight and saw them whispering to each other. Uncertainty flooded through my veins as I wondered what horrible things they were saying about me.

I moved towards the table set up with drinks, hoping a glass of punch would be able to wash away my insecurities.

As I picked up the ladle to pour my mother’s hand knocked it away from me.

“Really what are you thinking Anastasia?” Mother asked. “You know a lady cannot pour her own drink, have I taught you nothing?”

She took me by the hand, and led me to a corner of the room. Once she was sure we were out of hearing distance she began scolding me.

“Stop slouching, act like a lady for heaven’s sake Anastasia! Fix the expression on your face; you’re at a ball not headed towards the gallows!” I tried to do as she asked. “No, don’t smile so wide, you’re not a court jester. Honestly, Anastasia. You do try my patience so. Now, circulate. And, act like your enjoying yourself. Please.”

I immediately scurried away from her, relieved to have been dismissed. I turned to look back at her for a minute and somehow managed to walk into someone.

“I’m so- sorry,” I apologized, my eyes wide. I almost knocked over the Prince! Oh, Mother was going to be furious.

“Yes, well it’s all right. In the future though you may want to face the direction in which you’re headed,” he said.

I nodded numbly.

He scrutinized my face. “I don’t think we have danced yet. Shall we?” He offered me his arm and I took it, grateful to have this chance.

“Well, I as I’m sure you know, am Prince Charming. May I be so bold as to enquire your name?”

“Oh, it’s Anastasia Fullbright,” I answered hesitantly.

“Thank you for the pleasure of this dance, Miss Fullbright.”

“Oh, the pleasure is all mine.”

“It’s needless debating which one of us is more pleased; I believe my father’s pleasure exceeds anyone else’s.” He gestured towards the King, who did indeed have a smile on his face.

“I’m afraid his joy would still only come second to my mother’s.”

“Would it now? Maybe you are right. Tell me, Miss Fullbright-” The Prince paused abruptly in the middle of his sentence.

“Yes?” I prompted him.

“Ah, yes,” he continued with his question, and as we turned in a circle, I was able to discover the reason behind his pause.

She wore a pale blue dress that flowed beautifully to the ground reminding an observer of flowing water. Her eyes were a color similar to the dress, and her blonde hair was beautifully tied above her head. The most spectacular aspect of her appearance however was her footwear. Her shoes appeared to be made of glass. It wasn’t surprising that she had caught the Prince’s attention, most eyes in the room were on her.

The Prince continued to dance with me in relative silence, until the last note of the song was played. He bowed to me, and then went to ask the other girl for a dance. They stayed on the dance floor for most of the night, until the clock struck midnight and she mysteriously ran away, leaving behind only a glass slipper.

As we drove home in our carriage, Mother expressed her rage on both Drizella and I. She had expected better from us, me especially. She was especially furious for me letting the Prince slip through my fingers as she believed, like I had, that him asking me to dance meant something. We were both wrong.

Over a day has passed since the ball, yet she still refuses to speak to me. By being unable to find a rich husband, I have somehow led the family to financial ruin. It is all my fault, as always.

My attention is suddenly caught by the sound of horses trotting close to our home. I rush to the window to find a Royal Carriage stopping outside of the manor. A great big smile finds its way onto my face. Maybe the prince did like me, maybe I still have a chance, I think. I quickly check my appearance for any imperfections and then run down the stairs. Maybe I will have a happily ever after all.
